Showcase 1 Artifacts  Intention Statements

This section is revisiting the intention statements I wrote earlier in my journey as a honor student. I reflect on how my experiences as an IUI honor student have led to me developing better skills and achieving my goals. When I first wrote these statements, I was still exploring what I wanted to do in healthcare and still shaping my future. Now, as a senior health science student, I have a better idea of what I want to do in healthcare and the impact I want to have on my community. Although my idea of my future has shifted, I still hold onto the values that inspired me from the beginning.

Previous Statement

I am a student who is hardworking and determined to achieve their goals. I am interested in helping others and hope to pursue a career in healthcare. I want to bring diversity to healthcare and be a voice for women of color.

Who I was Then

When I wrote this, I was still deciding what role I wanted in healthcare and I didn't have a specific plan yet for my future. I knew I wanted to help others and be part of the medical field, but I was still getting a sense of direction. I also was focused on personal goals like family, spirituality, and being a role model for my younger siblings. I had strong values that were revolved around working to make an impact in my community.

"My values have stayed the same, but my goals are clearer now."

Updated Statement

I am an aspiring physician assistant and I am dedicated to achieving my goal of working in Pediatrics. I am committed to providing comprehensive and diverse care as a provider. I want to be a voice for children and families who need quality medical care, regardless of their financial or social status. I understand that many people face barriers to quality healthcare and I want to work to address this issue in the medical field.

Who I am Now

My values have stayed consistent, but my goals and future are clear to me now. Through my experiences in health science, and as a student in the honors college, I have gained confidence in my career choice and a better understanding of how access and social factors affect healthcare. This updated statement reflects my growth since my first class in H200 and who I am becoming now as I prepare to graduate and open a new chapter in my professional career.

Honors Journey Map: Then vs. Now

This section revisits the journey map I created my first year in H200 and reflects on my actual experiences throughout my student life. When I entered the honors college, my journey map was a reflection of the goals and opportunities I hoped for in my professional and academic life. Now as a senior in the honors college, I'm able to reflect on how my experiences aligned with as well as reshaped my original plans.

H200 Journey Map

This Prezi slideshow represents the goals and opportunities I identified with when I first entered the Honors College.

  • Clarified my goal of becoming a Physician Assistant through shadowing and interviews with providers

  • Focused my academic work in Health Sciences

  • Gained experiences relevant to patient care and advocacy by working in healthcare

  • Developed leadership, communication, and professional skills

  • Strengthened my commitment to equity, representation, and access to care

  • Expanded my worldview and my perspective on inter-professional collaboration by studying abroad in South Korea and learning about their healthcare system

Reflection

When I created my journey map in H200, my goals were broad because I was still deciding what a future in healthcare would look like for me. My original plan focused on gaining exposure, building leadership skills, and keeping my options open while I learn about different career paths. I knew I had to decide on a path so that I could take steps to grow my skill set in that profession.

Reflecting on my updated journey map showed me how much much my goals have become clear through my experiences throughout my college life. Instead of just planning, I was able to engage in opportunities and networking to help me confirm my interest in becoming a physician assistant. The experiences that were instrumental in shaping my outlook on the future were shadowing healthcare providers, working and volunteering in clinics, and changing my major to health science. Another experience that expanded my perspective on healthcare systems was studying abroad in South Korea over the summer of 2025. It strengthen my interest in inter-professional collaboration and patient advocacy to improve access to quality care for all.

Comparing my H 200 plan to my actual journey, really highlighted my growth as a student and a future healthcare provider. Although my values around equity, representation, and service have not changed, my experiences helped me understand how I want to apply those values in practice. This reflection shows my transition from setting goals to pursuing a path paved by my experiences and ethics.
