6-Word Essay Formal Description
“Minds weaken, but hands hold memories”
This image of my great aunt’s hands is a meaningful reminder of our connection despite her memory loss. Although her hands appear weathered with age, they hold memories still feel very present. It made me think about the phrase “Minds weaken, but hands hold memories,” and how it reflects the concept of aging. As people age, their cognitive abilities may decline, but the connections we form with them, especially the physical ones, can still be strong.
When I reflect on these words, I think about how although my great aunt developed memory loss as she grew older, I have always remembered the feeling of holding her hands as a means of comfort and familiarity. I also remember her taking my hands in hers and using my fingers to count her adhkar (remembrance of god). She always instilled in me the value of relying on my religious beliefs and values, especially in times of difficulty. This corresponds to what we discussed in controversy 1: older people with high levels of religious commitment have higher levels of life satisfaction than those for whom religious commitment is not important. Carstensen’s socioemotional selectivity theory also suggests that older adults tend to focus on emotionally meaningful experiences. I believe that to my aunt, the act of holding hands and praying showed that shift to emotional connection over new learning. My great aunt always emphasized how her faith gave her life meaning and allowed her to overcome difficulties in her life.
Additionally, she used to also tell me stories of our history and culture and used her hands to emphasize the meaning and importance of her stories. Thus, the image of her hands wrinkled with time, remind me of the "role" the older generation plays as someone who passed down stories of culture, traditions, and history. It also reflected the concept of crystallized intelligence because even though my aunt’s ability to process new information slowed, her wisdom, stemming from the years of accumulated knowledge, remained. Her wisdom is another reason why she maintained deep, meaningful relationships, despite struggling to recall details and facts.
My connection with my great aunt really shaped my understanding of memory and aging and taught me that although our bodies may weaken, the lasting impact we have on others will live on.
